DIY Stock Tank Pool
I cannot believe how many questions I am getting about our DIY stock tank pool! We completed this project last year in September, so this is our first Spring and summer to get to swim and enjoy our DIY pool!! I decided it was time to answer all the questions, and give you all the details on this stock tank pool.
Why a stock tank pool?
A stock tank pool is easy to maintain and the DIY is fairly easy, and budget friendly. We wanted a pool that our kids could enjoy, without the hassle of blowing up an inflatable pool every day, or the cost of an above ground pool.
What You’ll need for your DIY STOCK TANK POOL
Stock Tank 8′ | Stock Tank 6′ (This is the one we have)
We purchased ours from Tractor Supply, but if you don’t have one near you, you can get this one delivered.
Hole Saw (This connects into your power drill)

The original Stock Tank Pool was created by the girls over at Hey Wanderer Blog. They were extremely thorough in their DIY tutorial, and super helpful when you come upon issues.
Keeping You Stock Tank Pool Clean
Tips and Tricks from our Experience & Frequently Asked Questions:
- Make sure you drill the holes for the pumps in the center of your pool and not too high in the stock tank. We drilled our first hole too high and had to have my Brother in law weld a piece to fix our mistake. Learn from ours and make your holes lower than where your water line will sit.
- Prepare for the drilling. This part of the process was the hardest. Make sure you have someone with strength who can easily bore the hole into the metal, and a drill that has lots of power.
- Q: Does the black pool get hot to touch? A: NO, surprisingly it stays pretty cool, and never too hot to touch.
- Q: How big is your pool? A: We have the 6 foot pool. It is big enough for our whole family to sit inside.
- Q: Does it have a heater? A: Ours doesn’t have a heater. We might try and add one this next year. I will keep you updated!
- Q: Do you keep it exposed year round? A: We have a cover that we use during the year. You can also drain it and refill once a year.

Hi! What kind of paint did you use to the stock tank? I want mine black as well 😊
Hi!! I used exterior paint and primer from Home Depot. This color is called Carbon by Behr. We had some small chipping up by the top. I think it is because we didn’t allow it to cure with enough time. Let it cure for a few days before adding water and you should be good to go!!
