DIY Faux Wood Mantel

This DIY is easy but does require some use of power tools. Please be sure to research, learn and know your tools before using them. Uniquely Taylor Made is not responsible for injuries inflicted by use of power tools.

Have you seen my recent mantel makeover? I am so excited to share this DIY. It was a super easy and cheap. The floating mantel only cost me $10! Below is the list of tools and wood you will need for this project. If you don’t own a nail gun you can rent tools from Home Depot for a great price.

Tools you will need:

Drill

Nail Gun

Materials needed:

4 L brackets

4 Foot Common Board

46 1/2 inch Common Board

2-5.5 Inch Common Boards

Step One:

Cut and stain wood (I stained my boards Early American by Miniwax). Measure the length you want your mantel to be. Cut one piece that length. Then cut the second piece 1 1/2 inch shorter. Then cut two pieces of wood at 5 1/2 inches.

Example with my project : I cut one at 4 feet, one at 46 1/2 inches, and two at 5 1/2 inches.

Step Two

Hang 4 L brackets evenly spaced on your wall or fireplace. Be sure to use dry wall anchors to maximize the durability.

Step Three

Attach shorter piece of wood to the brackets using wood screws.

Step Four

Attach side pieces of wood to top shelf using nail gun. You want the side of the pine to be faced up and the raw cut edges to be against the wall.

Step Five

Finish the floating shelf with the final piece flushing it with the top and side pieces.

And there you have it. A beautiful faux mantel.
